CEO Vijay Joshi: India Can Take Inspiration From How BTA Popularizes Bulgarian Culture

Vijay Joshi, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of India’s national news agency Press Trust of India (PTI), observed that the partnership model utilized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to preserve and promote local culture could serve as an inspiration for India. Joshi made these comments during the launch of BTA’s initiative, “Pencho Slaveykov Today,” held at the Slaveykov House Museum in Tryavna. The initiative honors the 160th birth anniversary of the poet Pencho Slaveykov, a significant figure in modern Bulgarian literature.

Joshi stated that the collaboration between the national news agencies of the two countries offered a promising avenue for cultural exchange, expressing hope that this partnership would help increase awareness of Slaveykov within India. The event, moderated by literary scholar Yordan Eftimov, highlighted the importance of such initiatives for cultural preservation. The visit marked Joshi’s second time in Bulgaria.

Beyond the cultural focus, the meeting underscored the professional relationship between PTI and BTA. The two agencies maintain an agreement for news exchange and collaborate within MINDS International, an association of 25 global news agencies, facilitating information service cooperation. Joshi’s trip followed participation in the MINDS conference in Vienna.

After visiting BTA’s national press clubs in Belgrade and Skopje en route to Sofia, the delegation included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev and Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev. The engagement thus served as a platform for strengthening bilateral media ties while celebrating a key element of Bulgarian heritage.
