Journalists Helped Shape Impact of April Uprising, Journalist Boyko Vassilev Says

At a conference held in Panagyurishte marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Boyko Vassilev addressed the pivotal role of journalism in Bulgaria’s history. Speaking at the event organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), Vassilev asserted that three specific journalists left an indelible mark on the success of the uprising, which ultimately contributed to the Russo-Turkish War and Bulgaria’s liberation. Vassilev identified Zahari Stoyanov, credited with documenting both the positive and negative aspects of Bulgaria’s destiny.

He also highlighted Hristo Botev for publicizing the capture of the ship Radetzky and the impact of his death across Europe. Furthermore, Januarius MacGahan was cited for exposing the atrocities within Bulgaria to an international European audience. According to Vassilev, the power of the press lies in its ability to report on both the “light and shadow.” He referenced a poignant scene from Stoyanov’s work, describing Georgi Benkovski observing the burning of Panagyurishte and the deaths of trusted colleagues, yet maintaining that his objective had been achieved.

Regarding the BTA’s conference series, Vassilev clarified that the sessions are intended as ongoing discussions rather than mere lectures, aiming to connect historical events to contemporary Bulgarian life. He noted that even during the 50th anniversary of the uprising, Bulgarian society exhibited deep divisions. Vassilev concluded by stating that the April Uprising represents an enduring political dimension of Bulgaria that remains relevant today.
