Launches National Series on Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian Modernism

The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) initiated a nationwide series of discussions across its national press clubs to commemorate the 160th birth anniversary of poet Pencho Slaveykov and the movement of Bulgarian modernism. The first event, titled “Pencho Slaveykov Today,” was held at the Slaveykov House Museum in his hometown of Tryavna. The December issue of LIK magazine will feature coverage of these discussions, alongside a special section comprising 160 individual contributions of 160 words each, mirroring a previous tribute to Aleko Konstantinov.

BTA Director General Kiril Valchev stated that Pencho Slaveykov exemplifies the modern individual by embracing new ideas while maintaining spiritual growth and universal values without abandoning national identity. Valchev noted that Slaveykov’s work was shaped by his father, Petko Slaveykov, and Bulgaria’s liberation struggles, recalling that Pencho Slaveykov was nominated for a Nobel Prize in 1912. He emphasized that such initiatives allow Bulgarians to honor cultural figures continuously, extending the discourse beyond mere anniversaries.

Literary scholar Yordan Eftimov suggested that one goal is to create a national self-portrait through new readings of established works, helping Bulgarians understand themselves, while also underscoring BTA’s role in providing accurate information amid misinformation. Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev praised Slaveykov as a keen observer of national character and a bold critic who advocated for higher artistic standards. Vijay Joshi, CEO of India’s PTI, noted that India could draw inspiration from BTA’s partnership with local communities to promote and preserve Bulgarian culture.

Pencho Slaveykov (1866–1912) was a significant figure in Bulgarian literature. Despite becoming seriously ill at age seventeen, his worldview was shaped by literary influences such as Henrik Ibsen and Friedrich Nietzsche. He developed both lyrical and socio-critical works, reinforcing his democratic ideals, and eventually lived and died in exile.
