LIK Issue Dedicated to 150 Years Since April Uprising Launches in Koprivshtitsa

The latest issue of BTA’s LIK magazine is dedicated to marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876. This thematic publication explores the history of the uprising through BTA’s extensive archives, featuring documentation of commemorations held over the years. The magazine compiles commentary from educators, public figures, and representatives from the revolutionary districts central to the uprising’s history.

The launch event is set for Monday, April 20, at the St St Cyril and Methodius School in Koprivshtitsa, coinciding with the Day of the First Gunshot. The content reflects expert analysis, with contributors discussing the enduring lessons of the uprising for contemporary Bulgaria. Director General Kiril Valchev noted that the issue synthesizes discussions held at BTA’s national press clubs and in the four revolutionary districts.

He emphasized that while the uprising faced setbacks, its ultimate outcome was Bulgaria’s freedom. Journalist Boyko Vassilev framed the conversation around the uprising as a dialogue relevant to modern Bulgarian identity. The magazine also highlights the youth of the leaders, pointing out their commitment to political freedom over material security.

Professor Georgi Valchev discussed how the revolutionaries prioritized their ideals, choosing to “be” rather than simply “have.” Furthermore, the LIK magazine includes a thematic timeline drawing from BTA’s archives, tracing coverage of the uprising from the 20th century to the present day. This comprehensive presentation underscores the sustained national importance of the April Uprising in Bulgarian history.
