Mayor Urges Bulgarians to Be Worthy Heirs of April Uprising Heroes

At a national conference marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov addressed attendees, urging Bulgarians to honor the legacy of the ordinary people who became historical figures. The event, organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) at the Panagyurishte History Museum, emphasized that the anniversary should encourage reflection on national unity and pride. Gagov noted that the timing of the commemorations, which coincide with an election cycle, prompted a comparison between contemporary political leadership and historical figures, a comparison he stated was “not in favour of our present day.” He suggested the anniversary should serve two primary purposes: to ensure the commemoration is genuinely national, mirroring the aspirations of the original uprising, and to allow citizens to reconnect with history as a source of national pride.

According to the mayor, Bulgarians currently experience a “deficit of pride,” making the anniversary a crucial opportunity to remember the achievements of their ancestors, as current generations share common roots. He drew a contrast between the young revolutionaries of 1876 and today’s youth, observing that while modern young people focus on social media, their predecessors were preparing for sacrifice and “choosing immortality.” Gagov stressed that the heroes of the April Uprising were not mythical figures but real individuals, advocating for their legacy to be understood in human terms. He concluded by calling on Bulgarians to live up to the example set by those “ordinary people whom history made great.”

This conference is part of a broader series of discussions by BTA marking the 150th anniversary, falling under the “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe” initiative, involving BTA, Bulgarian National Television, and Bulgarian National Radio.
