Mayor Urges Bulgarians to Be Worthy Heirs of April Uprising Heroes

At the national conference marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov addressed attendees organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) at the Panagyurishte History Museum. Gagov emphasized that the anniversary should serve as a prompt for reflection on national unity and pride, paying tribute to the historical figures of the April Uprising. He noted that the timing of the commemorations, coinciding with an election campaign, prompted a contrast between current political leadership and that of the past.

According to Gagov, the observance should achieve two primary goals: establishing it as a truly national commemoration, reflecting the original aspirations of the uprising, and helping the public understand history as a source of national pride. Gagov suggested that the anniversary offers an opportunity to recall the achievements of past generations, asserting that current Bulgarians share the same historical roots. He drew a comparison between the young revolutionaries of 1876 and today’s youth, noting the difference in focus, from preparing for sacrifice to engaging with modern social media.

The mayor stressed that the heroes of the April Uprising were not mythical figures but tangible individuals, urging that their legacy be understood in human terms. He concluded by urging Bulgarians to live up to the example set by these “ordinary people whom history made great.”

This conference is part of a broader series of discussions organized by BTA to mark the 150th anniversary, falling under the “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe” initiative involving BTA, Bulgarian National Television, and Bulgarian National Radio.

  1. It is vital that these historical commemorations translate into tangible civic responsibility today.
