Members Lay Wreaths in Memory of Belene Forced Labour Camp Victims on 77th Anniversary of Its Establishment

Cabinet members paid tribute at the Belene forced labor camp on the 77th anniversary of its establishment. Tributes were offered at the site, known as the Second Site on Persin Island, following an initiative led by the caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister, Andrey Yankulov, and the caretaker Environment Minister, Julian Popov. The ceremony was attended by several high-ranking officials, including the caretaker Interior Minister, Emil Dechev, the caretaker Finance Minister, Georgi Klisurski, Chef de Cabinet Rumiana Bachvarova, alongside representatives from the regional administration in Pleven and the leadership of Belene Municipality.

The Belene camp, which commenced operations on April 27, 1949, served as the largest and longest-running facility for the internment of opponents of the communist regime in Bulgaria, operating intermittently until 1987. During the commemoration, attendees emphasized that preserving the memory of the victims requires a concerted effort across various institutions. Furthermore, participants noted that efforts are underway to finalize the process for declaring the Belene camp an immovable cultural asset of national significance.

The primary objective of this designation is to ensure the site is preserved as a dedicated space for remembrance and education, integrating it within the natural environment of Persin Island. The observance underscores the ongoing commitment of government members and caretaker officials to memorializing this period of Bulgarian history.
