As of April 23, the Bulgarian Ministry of Health reported an increase in measles infections, with six new cases registered. This brings the cumulative total of recorded cases to 165. The recent spread was documented across several regions, including two new instances in Vratsa, two in Lovech, and one each in Pleven and Sofia.
The Ministry of Health provided updates on the ongoing public health response. Iliya Tasev, Director of the Public Health Protection, Health Control and Patients’ Rights Directorate, confirmed that vaccination efforts have been significant since early March. He stated that 20,000 children have received vaccinations covering measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR).
The initial alert regarding the outbreak was raised on March 19, when the Ministry confirmed the first eight cases of measles, which were localized to the Vratsa region. In response to the confirmed spread, authorities immediately mandated emergency immunization protocols for all children identified as potentially unvaccinated. These ongoing reports underscore the sustained vigilance required to manage communicable diseases.
Public health officials continue to emphasize the importance of high vaccination coverage to curb the transmission of measles and protect community health. The data tracking the rising cases remains a key focus for national health authorities as they manage the immunization drive.
