Municipal Council to Request Taking Over Management of Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis from Culture Ministry

The Plovdiv Municipal Council voted on Thursday to submit a formal request to assume management responsibilities for the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis, transferring oversight from the Culture Ministry. Currently, the basilica operates under a co-ownership regime, with the Plovdiv Municipality holding a 55.8% stake and the State owning the remaining 44.2%. According to the council, taking over the management is necessary to ensure the sustained protection, maintenance, and execution of activities vital to preserving this significant immovable cultural asset.

The municipal body stated that this transfer would facilitate the continuation of scientific research, cultural programming, educational initiatives, and tourism efforts related to the site. The council emphasized that the municipality possesses a defined strategy for the exhibition, preservation, and promotion of the region’s historical and cultural heritage. The Bishop’s Basilica of Philippopolis is recognized as a structure of considerable historical, artistic, and scientific merit.

Its importance is underscored by its inclusion in the UNESCO Tentative List for Cultural and Natural Heritage, specifically as part of the serial property titled “Bishop’s Basilica and Late-Antique Mosaics of Philippopolis, Roman Province of Thrace.” This decision by the municipal council reflects a commitment to local stewardship over the management of the important basilica.
