During a conference hosted by BTA marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov, Director of the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte, addressed the significance of historical events in shaping national identity.
Shopov noted that instances like the April Uprising and the subsequent Unification demonstrate that Bulgarians have achieved success through independent action and strategic surprise. Speaking on Thursday, he emphasized that history serves not only as a record of the past but also as a guide for future progress, cautioning against repeating past errors. He recalled that the events of April 30, 1876, were deeply significant for Panagyurishte, where the local population risked everything for future freedom despite knowing the odds.
According to the director, the town possessed a highly developed civic society even before the conflict, featuring numerous guilds and shops mobilized for a common cause. Shopov observed that while the insurgents did not anticipate defeating the Ottoman Empire, their primary aim was to awaken a collective belief in the people’s inherent strength. He highlighted the April Uprising as a source of patriotism that continues to inform national consciousness.
Furthermore, he pointed to the assembly in Oborishte as an early example of statehood and tolerance—values he believes are crucial for modern Europe. The event, organized with support from the Panagyurishte Municipality and the Historical Museum, is part of a larger BTA initiative commemorating 14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe. Shopov concluded by affirming Panagyurishte’s pivotal role in the development of Bulgarian state traditions.
