Rector Prof. Valchev: It Is Time to Look at History as Living Page

Speaking at a BTA-hosted conference titled “150 Years since the April Uprising of 1876” in Panagyurishte, Sofia University Rector Prof. Georgi Valchev urged attendees to view history as a dynamic process rather than a collection of mere slogans or displays of patriotism. The prof suggested that Bulgaria is currently navigating a period of complexity comparable to the challenges faced by Bulgarians in 1876.

According to the rector, the nineteenth century was marked by numerous attempts at political liberation, including efforts to leverage international conflicts. Valchev highlighted that after repeated unsuccessful endeavors, Bulgarians realized the necessity of assuming self-responsibility to ensure dignity. He stated that the events of 1876 demonstrated a collective will to control their own destiny—a crucial lesson for the present time.

The prof outlined three key lessons derived from that period. First, the uprising stemmed from a deep belief in the nation’s future, demanding that commemorations initiate a continuous commitment to preserving memory through the sharing of historical and family narratives. Second, he emphasized the importance of believing in the younger generation, noting that they were historically the ones who assumed significant responsibility.

Finally, he stressed that while accepting self-sacrifice as an idea is one thing, taking responsibility for the welfare of the community is another. Valchev concluded that the duty of the current generation is to organize the state.
