A specialized team from the Burgas Naval Base, part of the Bulgarian Navy, recently conducted an operation to locate and neutralize the remains of a drone found washed ashore near the Elenite resort. According to a Defence Ministry press release issued Friday, the recovered object was identified as the nose section of a drone, containing two battery packs and an estimated 200 to 300 grams of explosive material. Following direct orders from the Navy Commander, the material was safely destroyed on site after all necessary safety protocols were implemented.
The operation required the activation of a specialized group tasked with the reconnaissance, marking, recovery, transport, and destruction of unexploded ordnance. This deployment followed a request from the Burgas Regional Governor and received authorization from the Chief of Defence. These recent actions are part of ongoing efforts by the Bulgarian Navy to manage hazardous materials found along the coast.
Previously, on April 26, specialized teams from the naval bases in Varna and Burgas inspected and transported drone debris discovered near Karadere and Ahtopol. Furthermore, on April 23, teams at the Burgas naval base discovered and assessed both an air defense missile engine and a drone. Both items were deemed non-hazardous and brought to the base for further handling.
These incidents underscore the Navy’s commitment to securing the maritime environment and ensuring the safe disposal of hazardous debris found on the beach.
