‘s Opposition Pushes for By-Elections and Possible Early National Elections

Arrests of mayors and municipal officials from districts governed by Turkey’s primary opposition party continue, while the opposition is increasingly focusing its efforts on the national parliament. The main opposition force, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), led by Özgür Özel, is actively campaigning to trigger parliamentary by-elections and potentially call for early presidential and general elections. Since late March, numerous local officials and mayors from CHP-controlled municipalities have faced detentions on charges including corruption and organized crime.

Recent operations have impacted coastal cities like Antalya and Marmaris, as well as boroughs in Ankara and Istanbul. These arrests are part of a broader anti-corruption campaign primarily targeting municipalities aligned with the opposition. Against this backdrop, CHP leader Özel has launched a campaign pushing for by-elections and renewed calls for early national elections.

Political analysts suggest the opposition views by-elections as a means to challenge the government and potentially pave the way for earlier general elections. To force by-elections, the opposition must reach the constitutional threshold of five percent vacant parliamentary seats. However, the feasibility of such elections remains questionable.

While the opposition has stated plans to resign lawmakers to meet the threshold, the ruling coalition maintains a significant majority. President Erdoğan has dismissed the notion of early elections, stating the government is focused on its current agenda. Consequently, despite the opposition’s efforts, the chances of early elections are considered low due to the ruling coalition’s strong political support.
