Safety Agency to Destroy 2 Tonnes of Yoghurt, 4,200 Litres of Ayran Over False Markings

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) reported the destruction of significant quantities of dairy products following inspections in the Silistra Region. Authorities confirmed that over two tonnes of yoghurt and more than 4,200 liters of ayran were condemned due to deficiencies in labeling and dating. During an inspection conducted on April 24, inspectors from Dobrich identified several violations at the dairy facility.

Specifically, the agency noted that the yoghurt stored in a cold room lacked clear identification markings detailing the batch and expiration dates. Furthermore, the inspection uncovered 750 kg of yoghurt cups and nearly 17,000 bottles of ayran bearing production dates that suggested a manipulated shelf life. For instance, the ayran labels indicated a production date of April 25, despite the inspection occurring on April 24, while the yoghurt lids displayed a production date of May 3 of the current year.

The BFSA stated that it continues to employ cross-checking procedures, utilizing staff from one region to inspect another, a method intended to mitigate local dependencies and maintain rigorous oversight. Separately, the agency also conducted an inspection at a meat production and processing plant in Dulovo, Silistra Region. Following this review, more than 3.5 tonnes of food of animal origin were banned from sale and scheduled for destruction.

These actions underscore the agency’s ongoing commitment to food safety compliance across various sectors.
