American saxophonist and composer Patrick Bartley will perform with his quartet in Sofia to commemorate International Jazz Day. The performance is scheduled for Thursday, April 30, at Hall 3 of the National Palace of Culture (NDK) as part of the Salon des Arts at NDK. The event features original music from Bartley’s unrecorded project, New Visions.
The event is co-organized by the Festivals in Bulgaria Association, NDK, Jazz FM Radio, and Sofia’s National Academy of Music. During the visit, the American quartet will also conduct a workshop for local Bulgarian jazz musicians. Patrick Bartley, born in 1993, began his musical journey playing the clarinet in the third grade before switching to the saxophone in high school.
He made his initial professional recording at age 17. His career has included collaborations and performances alongside notable artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, and Jon Batiste. Bartley has performed at major venues including Madison Square Garden and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and appeared on television programs like “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
Furthermore, Bartley has a history of recognition within the jazz community, having been twice invited to the Grammy Recording Academy’s High School Ensemble and reaching the final nomination stage in the “Best Improvised Jazz Solo” category in 2014.
He has also composed music for a concert series at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, following an invitation from Wynton Marsalis. Critics note that Bartley’s music successfully merges the jazz tradition with contemporary influences from funk, soul, and Japanese pop culture, creating a dynamic experience for both established jazz enthusiasts and new listeners.
