The 16th edition of the Sofia Paper Art Fest, themed “Beyond the Surface,” is scheduled to open on April 28 at the National Palace of Culture (NDK), running through May 16. The festival is organized by the Amateras Foundation in collaboration with NDK and forms part of the larger 23rd Salon of the Arts. The central focus of the event explores the hidden layers within memory, identity, and cultural transformation, positioning paper not merely as a medium, but as a conduit for ideas, time, and artistic expression.
This international celebration of art features large-scale exhibitions, including the Biennial of Contemporary Paper Art in the West lobby and the 17th annual Amateras Exhibition-Competition in the Marble lobby. A total of 117 artists representing 18 countries are participating in the festival. The program is diverse, incorporating art tours, curator meetings, and curated exhibitions showcasing work from nations including Bulgaria, Japan, Brazil, Poland, and Taiwan.
During the opening ceremony, an award presentation for the Amateras competition will take place. A key element of this year’s event is the prominent inclusion of young Bulgarian artists, supporting the growth of contemporary art within the country. Additional highlights include a presentation of Japanese calligraphy by Minoru Goto and a demonstration by Phenix Varbanov on April 30.
Recognized by the European Commission’s Innovation Label, the festival has established itself as a significant international platform for cultural exchange through paper art. The Sofia event is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sofia Municipality, the National Culture Fund, and private partners.
