Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Students from Sofia schools participated in a historical educational game titled “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” hosted by the Sofia Municipality. The event, held in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, took place along the Prominent Bulgarians alley. In this activity, the participating students were divided into teams and engaged in a search for national monuments dedicated to Bulgarian heroes.

The initiative aims to connect students with Bulgarian history beyond traditional classroom settings, according to Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development. Participants followed designated routes that linked key monuments to revolutionaries such as Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. To complete their exploration, the teams had to answer questions related to Bulgarian history and collect pieces forming a symbolic map of the uprising.

Upon concluding the walk, each team composed a brief message to the Bulgarian people, reflecting on the knowledge gained. The game concept was developed with the input of history teacher Emil Jassim and is integrated into the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program. This effort is carried out in collaboration with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate, ensuring that the memory of these heroes and the significance of the uprising are passed on to the next generation of students.
