Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

To mark the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, students from Sofia schools participated in a historical educational game titled “In the Footsteps of the Heroes.” The initiative was organized by the Sofia Municipality and held in the city’s Boris Garden Park. The activity took place along the Prominent Bulgarians alley, where teams of students engaged in a historical scavenger hunt. Participants navigated routes connecting key monuments dedicated to national heroes, including revolutionaries Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski.

As the students followed the footsteps of these figures, they answered questions concerning Bulgarian history. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the event aimed to commemorate a significant act of courage and encourage students to engage with history outside of traditional classroom settings. To complete the experience, teams collected puzzle pieces forming a symbolic map of the uprising by correctly answering historical queries.

Upon concluding the walk, each group penned a message to the Bulgarian people inspired by their learning journey. The game concept was developed with the assistance of history teacher Emil Jassim and is featured as part of the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, implemented in collaboration with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate. The event successfully provided the students with an immersive and tangible connection to Bulgaria’s historical legacy.
