Following statements from Interior Ministry’s acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who alleged he faced pressure to resign, Continue the Change (CC) leader Assen Vassilev commented on Facebook. Vassilev stated that the situation suggested a pattern where, in Bulgaria, authorities attempt to undermine someone as soon as they begin doing their job. He characterized the accusations leveled against Kandev as “absolutely scandalous” threats.
Vassilev further contended that achieving a “prosperous, just, and European Bulgaria” required immediate structural changes, specifically citing the necessity of replacing the Supreme Judicial Council and reforming the entire judicial system. His comments were accompanied by a photograph of Kandev, captioned with a declaration of defiance. Earlier on Friday, Kandev posted a video message on Facebook, stating that he had received directives to leave his post, but affirming that he would not yield to threats or “backroom deals.” He reported that on Thursday, he had been informed that individuals, including one nicknamed “Kartofa,” had provided false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office.
The exchange highlights escalating tensions within Bulgarian governance. While Kandev publicly asserted his commitment to his role despite external pressures, Vassilev utilized the incident to advocate for sweeping institutional reforms, suggesting that the current environment makes it difficult for someone to perform their duties without facing scrutiny or challenge regarding their professional conduct.
