Following a statement from Interior Ministry’s acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, in which he mentioned facing pressure to resign, Continue the Change (CC) leader Assen Vassilev issued comments via Facebook. Vassilev stated that the situation suggested that in Bulgaria, as soon as someone begins doing their job, they are allegedly targeted with false accusations. He described the threats directed at Secretary General Kandev as “absolutely scandalous.”
Vassilev further asserted that the only path to a “prosperous, just, and European Bulgaria” involved the immediate replacement of the Supreme Judicial Council and the comprehensive overhaul of the judicial system.
His comments were accompanied by a photo of Kandev, captioned with the hashtag “I won’t go home.”
Earlier on Friday, Kandev posted a video message on Facebook. In it, he addressed reports that he had “received a message to go home,” but affirmed that he would not comply with “threats and backroom deals.” The conflict escalated when Kandev indicated that individuals, including a person known by the nickname “Kartofa” (The Potato), provided false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office on Thursday. The exchange highlights escalating political tensions regarding the operation of state institutions.
