Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Sofia Municipality organized the historical educational game, “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” for students from local schools. The event took place in Boris Garden Park, centering activities along the Prominent Bulgarians alley. The initiative involved teams of students undertaking a guided historical journey.

Participants were tasked with locating and engaging with monuments dedicated to national heroes. As they progressed, the teams answered questions concerning Bulgarian history, following routes that connected significant figures such as Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, responsible for education and urban development, noted that the activity aims to encourage students to connect with history outside the traditional classroom setting.

The gameplay was structured so that by correctly answering questions, the teams collected segments of a symbolic map representing the uprising. Upon completing the walk, each group composed a short message addressed to the Bulgarian people, reflecting on their learning experience. The concept for the game was developed in collaboration with history teacher Emil Jassim and is integrated into the Sofia Municipality’s cultural programming, executed in partnership with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate.

The event provided a tangible way for young participants to trace the footsteps of Bulgaria’s past revolutionaries while reinforcing knowledge of the nation’s heritage.
