Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Sofia Municipality hosted a historical educational game titled “In the Footsteps of the Heroes” in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The initiative engaged local students by having them participate in a structured journey through the Prominent Bulgarians alley. Divided into teams, the students navigated the route to locate monuments dedicated to national heroes.

At each stop, the participants were required to answer questions pertaining to Bulgarian history. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the event aims to connect students with history beyond traditional classroom settings, marking 150 years since the uprising. The game guided the participants along paths linking key revolutionary figures, including Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski.

As the students progressed through the footsteps of these figures, they collected segments of a symbolic map representing the uprising’s events. Upon completing the walk, each team composed a brief message to the Bulgarian people, inspired by the historical knowledge they had gained. The concept was developed in collaboration with history teacher Emil Jassim and is integrated into the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, executed in partnership with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate.

The activity successfully provided an immersive learning experience, allowing the students to actively connect with the legacy of Bulgaria’s heroes.
