A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to foster dialogue regarding the significance of the uprising. Participants included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, BNR Director General Milen Mitev, Prof.
Georgi Valchev, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, journalist Boyko Vassilev, and Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov.
BTA Director General Valchev stated that discussions about the April Uprising keep the memory of those who sacrificed for Bulgaria’s freedom alive. He noted that the talks spanned the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—as well as Ruse and Giurgiu. Valchev emphasized that the key takeaway was the necessity of establishing long-term goals before tackling immediate challenges.
He also announced that the 2026 Meeting of Bulgarian Media, organized by BTA, will focus on “Media and Leaders” in Hungary. BNR Director General Mitev stressed the media’s crucial role in connecting with the public and shaping opinion. He advised that national pride must be nurtured responsibly, as history and pride are often manipulated.
Prof. Valchev urged viewing history as a living subject, moving beyond mere slogans. He highlighted three lessons from 1876: the desire to determine one’s own destiny, the belief in the nation’s future, and the importance of the younger generation taking responsibility.
Panagyurishte Mayor Gagov called for the anniversary to inspire reflection on unity and national pride, urging Bulgarians to honor the legacy of ordinary people who became historical figures. Boyko Vassilev pointed out the lasting influence of journalists during the April Uprising, noting that the event raises enduring questions relevant to contemporary Bulgarian public life.
