Commemoration Is Held in Historic Oborishte Area to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

A nationwide commemoration marking the 150th anniversary of the outbreak of the April Uprising was held in the historic area of Oborishte. The event commenced with the opening of the fully renovated Alley of Freedom, which connects the outskirts of Panagyurishte to the monument in Oborishte, where attendees paid their respects. During his address at the monument in Oborishte, Ivan Lalov, Chairman of the Municipal Council of Panagyurishte, reflected on the historical significance of the uprising.

He stated that the desire for freedom among Bulgarians eventually led to the April Rebellion, describing it as the “Bulgarian spring” following a prolonged period of difficulty. Lalov emphasized the importance of Oborishte, noting that on April 14, 1876, delegates from various regions gathered there, united by the belief in a free Bulgaria. He added that Oborishte marks the beginning of the Bulgarian parliamentary tradition.

Concluding his remarks, Lalov cited Professor Marko Semov’s assertion that the Bulgarian National Revival reached its peak in Oborishte and Panagyurishte, where national awareness was strongly expressed. He concluded by stating that Oborishte and Panagyurishte remain central to the nation’s historical identity. The commemoration was attended by numerous dignitaries, including members of parliament, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, municipal councillors, representatives from various state and local authorities, and academic figures.

Wreaths and floral tributes were laid at the site as part of the observance.
