Commemoration Is Held in Historic Oborishte Area to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

A nationwide commemoration was held in the historic area of Oborishte to mark the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The observance commenced with the inauguration of the fully renovated Alley of Freedom, which connects the outskirts of Panagyurishte to the monument site in Oborishte, where attendees paid their respects. During his address at the monument, Ivan Lalov, Chairman of the Municipal Council of Panagyurishte, reflected on the historical significance of the uprising.

He stated that the struggle for freedom, despite periods of oppression, demonstrated an enduring national will. Lalov noted that the desire for freedom among Bulgarians culminates in the April rebellion, likening the event to a national awakening following a long period. He emphasized the importance of Oborishte, stating that the gathering of delegates from various regions on April 14, 1876, marked a shared belief in a free Bulgaria.

Lalov further remarked that Oborishte signifies the genesis of the Bulgarian parliamentary tradition. He concluded by referencing Professor Marko Semov’s assessment that the Bulgarian National Revival reached its peak in Oborishte and Panagyurishte, positioning the two locations as central to the nation’s historical trajectory. The commemoration was attended by numerous dignitaries, including members of parliament, Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, and other representatives from state and local authorities, alongside academic and institutional leaders.

Wreaths and floral tributes were laid at the site during the ceremony.
