A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising against Ottoman rule is taking place today, April 30, at the Museum of History in Panagyurishte. This forum is part of a broader series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to foster public dialogue surrounding the significant historical milestone. Attendees at the event include several prominent figures, such as BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, Sofia University Rector Georgi Valchev, Bulgarian National Radio Director General Milen Mitev, local official Panagyurishte Mahyor Zhelyazko Gagov, the Museum of History Director Atanas Shopov, and theatre director Bina Haralampieva.
Journalist Boyko Vasilev, host of “Panorama” on Bulgarian National Television, will moderate the proceedings. These commemorative conferences are structured under the “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe” initiative, a joint effort by BTA, the National Television, and the National Radio. The overarching goal of this initiative is to recognize and highlight major anniversaries in Bulgarian history that have contributed to the broader narrative of European history.
The event serves as a platform for reflection on the historical significance of the 1876 uprising.
