A replica of the Giro d’Italia trophy is currently being constructed in Plovdiv for the third stage of the cycling event. According to Plovdiv 2019 Foundation Executive Director Kiril Velchev, the steel installation is slated for placement at the roundabout on Maritsa-Yug Blvd, near the Water Palace, along the race route. The replica is being manufactured by the artists Nedyalka Mitkova and Dimitar Mitkov.
The family noted that the task presented a significant challenge due to the cup’s highly distinctive and complex shape. The original, known as the “Trofeo Senza Fine” (Endless Trophy), is characterized by its upward-spiraling ribbon design, which narrows in the center, creating an hourglass silhouette. Nedyalka Mitkova stated that creating the piece is a significant honor and responsibility.
The team selected stainless steel for the material to ensure the installation’s durability against weather and time. This choice also facilitated the recreation of the polished effect seen inside the original trophy, while a delicate shiny edge was reproduced on the exterior. Upon completion, the structure will be toned to match the original bronze color.
The total height of the installation will reach 4.5 metres, including a metal pedestal engraved with the year the Giro passed through the city and the Plovdiv logo. The entire structure is expected to weigh approximately 1.5 tonnes, and spotlights will be installed at the base for nighttime illumination. In related coverage, BTA has launched a dedicated section titled “Giro d’Italia 2026 – Cycling in Bulgaria.” This section details Bulgaria’s participation in hosting three stages of the race, which are scheduled to take place from May 8 to May 10, 2026.
