A ceremonial academic session marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876 will take place in Sofia on Monday. St Kliment Ohridski Sofia University stated that the April Uprising constituted a purely Bulgarian undertaking whose outcome represented the definitive consolidation of the Bulgarian nation during its fight for independence. To commemorate this pivotal moment in Bulgarian history, several institutions are collaborating on the academic session.
Organizers include Sofia University, the State Archives Agency, the G.S. Rakovski National Defence College, the St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo, the St Cyril and St Methodius National Library, and the Institute for Historical Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The day’s events are scheduled to begin at 11:00 am with a ceremony held at the National Defence College.
This will be followed by the formal opening of the academic session at 1:00 pm in the Rectorate of Sofia University, where historians will participate in panel discussions concerning the landmark anniversary. Additionally, a poster exhibition dedicated to the April Uprising will open at 1:45 pm in the Rectorate foyer, curated by Asst. Prof.
Vladimir Terziev. The formal proceedings will conclude in the late afternoon with the opening of the exhibition titled “For the Freedom of a Nation” at the National Library. This exhibition is a joint effort between the National Library and the State Archives Agency, ensuring a comprehensive academic observance of the historical significance of the uprising in Sofia.
