-UDF to Back Progressive Bulgaria Candidate for Parliament Chair

The GERB-UDF parliamentary group announced support for a representative from Progressive Bulgaria to chair the new 52nd National Assembly, citing the party’s recent electoral victory. During the Assembly’s inaugural session on Thursday, MP Toma Bikov stated that this endorsement should be viewed not as a negotiating maneuver, but as an effort to restore established parliamentary traditions and elevate the political standard within the institution. Bikov further elaborated that raising this standard does not preclude political disagreement; rather, it mandates the opposition’s responsibility to represent citizens with viewpoints differing from the parliamentary majority, ensuring their right to open expression.

Speaking on behalf of the UDF, the group addressed the governance trajectory of Bulgaria. They noted that the nation has experienced coalition governments over the past twelve years, culminating in a period of chronic political instability and an inability to form a stable government within the last five years. Bikov argued that this instability occurred despite the need for stable decision-making amid a volatile geopolitical climate, necessary systemic reforms, and fiscal policies that have normalized budget deficits.

The group reiterated its long-standing call for an increase in the quality of political debate. Bikov warned that personal attacks and scandals undermine public trust in the entire political system and its governing institutions in Bulgaria.
