The Czech Centre in Sofia has announced the discontinuation of its cultural and educational activities in Bulgaria, following a decision by the Czech Centres network. The institution issued a statement confirming that the closure marks the end of its operations in the Bulgarian capital. While planned events are scheduled to continue through the end of May, the announcement prompted a strong reaction from local academic bodies.
The Centre in Sofia holds significant historical importance, marking its 77th anniversary on May 5. Its roots trace back to 1949, when an art and craft shop, Ceskoslovenska tvorba Orbis, was established in Sofia under an intergovernmental cultural agreement between Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria. Following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the Czech Republic established the modern Czech Centres to continue these cultural ties.
In response to the planned cessation of activities, the Academic Council of Sofia University unanimously supported an open letter urging a reconsideration of the decision. The Council emphasized the profound historical and cultural significance of the Centre and its sustained role in maintaining long-standing Czech-Bulgarian relations. The Centre has historically served as a vital link between the Czech culture and the local community in Sofia.
Its closure has prompted concern regarding the continuity of Czech cultural exchange within the city. The academic body stressed that the Centre remains a key institution for cultural dialogue, making the network’s decision a point of significant local concern.
