On May 2, 1974, a fashion show took place in Ruse on the Danube, presenting 300 new models from several prominent Bulgarian manufacturing enterprises. According to preserved archives from BTA, the event featured participation from fashion houses including Boriana in Cherven Bryag, Arda in Ruse, Sanya in Pleven, Burya in Gabrovo, Druzhba in Varna, Mizia in Pleven, and Bulgaria in Plovdiv. One photograph from the event captures young pop singer Tanya Emilova performing for the audience.
The participating companies represent a segment of Bulgaria’s centrally planned, state-owned fashion and textile manufacturing sector, which operated throughout the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1946–1989). This industry focused heavily on mass production intended for the domestic market and for export to other Eastern Bloc (Comecon) nations, primarily the Soviet Union. Historically, the featured houses have significant industrial backgrounds.
Boriana was founded in 1968. Arda, an iconic clothing manufacturer in Ruse, was established in 1932, with a new factory building opening in the city center in 1968. Sanya’s textile factory received approval for an expansion project from the Council of Ministers in 1972, while Mizia was founded in 1960.
These details illustrate the established infrastructure supporting the national fashion industry during this period. The 1974 show served as a major showcase for the contemporary output of these key textile producers.
