2, 1974: Fashion Show in Ruse Presents 300 New Models

On May 2, 1974, a fashion show took place in Ruse on the Danube, showcasing 300 new models from several prominent Bulgarian manufacturing enterprises. The event featured contributions from fashion houses including Boriana in Cherven Bryag, Arda in Ruse, Sanya in Pleven, Burya in Gabrovo, Druzhba in Varna, Mizia in Pleven, and a representative from Plovdiv. Archival photographs from BTA document the occasion, noting the performance of young pop singer Tanya Emilova for the audience.

The participating companies represented a sector operating under a centrally planned, state-owned structure characteristic of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1946–1989). During this period, the fashion and textile manufacturing industry concentrated on mass production aimed at the domestic market and export to other Eastern Bloc (Comecon) nations, particularly the Soviet Union. The featured enterprises have distinct histories.

The iconic clothing manufacturer Arda, established in 1932, had opened a new factory building in the center of Ruse in 1968. Boriana, founded in 1968, and Mizia, established in 1960, were also key players in the national fashion landscape. Furthermore, the textile factory Sanya in Pleven had received approval in 1972 for a conceptual expansion project from the Council of Ministers.

These varied operations illustrate the scale and scope of the Bulgarian fashion industry at the time.
