Market Discrimination Most Common in Hiring and Pay

A recent survey conducted by the Commission for Protection against Discrimination (CPD) revealed widespread instances of economic discrimination across several sectors. Out of 592 respondents, 53.7% reported experiencing some form of discrimination. The study, which analyzed manifestations of economic discrimination during November and December 2024, found that employment remains a primary area of concern.

Specifically, 47.8% of respondents noted discrimination when applying for jobs, while 33.1% reported issues related to pay. Further areas cited include receiving additional benefits (32.6%), working conditions (26.1%), and career development (31.2%). Beyond the labor market, the CPD found that discrimination affects access to essential services.

According to 36.5% of respondents, discrimination occurs when accessing healthcare, education, and social care. Other areas of concern include pricing of goods/services (27.2%), public procurement processes (27.9%), and financial lending practices (25.4%). The CPD identified several vulnerable groups most affected by discrimination, including older workers (53.8%) and ethnic minorities (50.4%).

The Commission noted that negative perceptions toward specific groups and a lack of information are the most cited causes of this discrimination. The CPD recommends strengthening anti-discrimination regulations and increasing public awareness. The organization emphasized that the proceedings for protection from discrimination are free of charge.

The findings underscore that discrimination is a multifaceted issue, impacting individuals when accessing economic opportunities and basic services.
