200,000 Bulgarians Cast Votes Abroad, 53,000 Voted by Machine, Says Foreign Minister Neynsky

Following Bulgaria’s early parliamentary elections on April 19, Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynsky reported that nearly 200,000 Bulgarian citizens voted abroad. She noted that a significant portion of these voters, 156,000—or 81%—had not completed advance registration and submitted applications on Election Day, which reportedly slowed the process. The Minister provided updates on the operational logistics across various countries.

She reported that voting procedures extended past the official end of the day in seven sections in Turkiye due to queues, while five sections in London, United Kingdom, required extended working hours. Additionally, one section each in Spain and Norway, and two sections in Serbia, operated beyond 8 pm. Neynsky detailed the organizational framework managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which adheres to the Electoral Code.

This code limits polling stations outside European Union member states and diplomatic missions to twenty locations. To manage the election, the Ministry conducted intensive consultations with local communities and volunteer groups to determine the optimal distribution of these twenty sections. In response to questions, the Minister confirmed that representatives proposed expanding the number of sections and increasing the size of sectional election commissions.

Furthermore, applications for electronic voting were submitted to designated polling
