363 Kg Marijuana Worth EUR 3 Mln Seized at Lesovo Border Crossing

Customs officers at the Lesovo border crossing seized nearly 363 kg of marijuana from a lorry transporting washing machines, according to the Customs Agency on Friday. The narcotic substance is estimated to be worth approximately EUR 3 million at judicial prices. The incident occurred on Thursday when the lorry, bearing Romanian registration, arrived at the Lesovo border crossing on the outbound lane from Romania.

During the customs control process, the Turkish national driver presented documentation confirming the transport of washing machines in transit from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria, and declared nothing else for inspection. A comprehensive customs inspection revealed 25 boxes situated atop the declared washing machines in the cargo. These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry green leafy substance.

Field drug tests conducted on the material within these packages tested positive for marijuana. Ultimately, a total of 362 kg of marijuana was seized. The driver has been detained, and pre-trial proceedings have commenced in the case.

The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is expected to submit a request to the court for the imposition of a pre-trial detention measure.
