On April 30, 1981, Hristo Prodanov achieved a significant mountaineering milestone by summiting Lhotse, an 8,516-meter Himalayan peak. This ascent marked him as the first Bulgarian national to reach an eight-thousander, and the fourth person globally to summit the mountain without supplemental oxygen. Prodanov led the “Himalayas 81” Bulgarian national expedition, which was organized to commemorate the 1,300th anniversary of the Bulgarian State.
The expedition involved a rigorous trek, progressing from the base camp through the challenging Khumbu Icefall to establish intermediate camps up to Camp 4, located in the high-altitude “death zone.” Following logistical adjustments due to weather, a core group of four, including Prodanov, began the final ascent. On the summit day, the team initiated the final assault on the peak. Prodanov set out first, proceeding without oxygen.
After navigating difficult terrain, including a challenging couloir, he reached the summit ridge. At 1:55 p.m., Prodanov successfully reached the summit of Lhotse. He marked the achievement by planting the Bulgarian tricolor flag and leaving a soil sample.
The successful ascent was followed by a challenging descent. Prodanov’s teammates continued the climb but faced equipment issues during their own attempts to reach the summit. The entire expedition eventually returned safely to the base camp.
Prodanov’s achievement remains a notable record in Himalayan climbing history.
