45 Years since First Bulgarian Ascent of Eight-Thousander: Himalaya’s Lhotse

On April 30, 1981, Hristo Prodanov achieved a significant mountaineering milestone by summiting Lhotse, the Himalayan peak at 8,516 meters. This ascent marked a historical achievement, as Prodanov became the first Bulgarian to reach an eight-thousander and the fourth person globally to summit the peak without supplemental oxygen. Prodanov led the “Himalayas 81,” a Bulgarian national expedition organized to commemorate the 1,300th anniversary of the Bulgarian State.

The journey was arduous, requiring the team to establish intermediate camps across treacherous terrain, including the Khumbu Icefall. Following preparations, the decisive assault on the summit began on April 30. Prodanov led the initial climb, setting off at 7 a.m.

Despite deteriorating weather conditions, including strong winds and snowfall, he navigated the final ascent. Prodanov reached the summit at 1:55 p.m. local time.

At the peak, he raised the Bulgarian flag and left a soil capsule representing his homeland. The descent proved equally challenging. After securing the summit, Prodanov and his teammates navigated dangerous conditions.

While the initial plans were altered due to weather, the expedition members successfully completed the descent. By May 2, all members of the team reached the base camp safely, concluding the highly ambitious endeavor. Prodanov’s accomplishment remains a notable chapter in Bulgarian mountaineering history.
