The 52nd National Assembly convened for its inaugural session on Thursday. Following the split of the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria coalition, six parliamentary groups were formed. The session commenced with the administration of the oath to the 240 lawmakers by Progressive Bulgaria MP Rumen Milanov.
President Iliana Iotova addressed the deputies, emphasizing that the legislature must prioritize voting on the 2026 State budget. She stressed the necessity for Bulgaria to assert a strong and influential voice within the European Union. Mihaela Dotsova of Progressive Bulgaria was elected National Assembly Chair with support from her coalition, GERB-UDF, and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF).
Following the announcement of the six parliamentary groups, each elected a Deputy Chair. During speeches, representatives outlined their legislative priorities. Dotsova emphasized the need to restore best practices in Bulgarian lawmaking, advocating for debate-based processes over procedural formalism.
Progressive Bulgaria highlighted the passing of the State budget, addressing treasury issues, and electing a new Supreme Judicial Council as key tasks. Other parties articulated distinct opposition stances. CC-DB stated its commitment to defending the rule of law and supporting Bulgaria’s European trajectory.
