52nd National Assembly’s Inaugural Sitting: Parliament Chair Elected, Six Parliamentary Groups Formed

The 52nd National Assembly convened for its inaugural session on Thursday in Bulgaria. Following the split of the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) coalition on Wednesday, six parliamentary groups were established. Progressive Bulgaria MP Mihaela Dotsova was elected National Assembly Chair with support from her coalition, GERB-UDF, and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF); other political forces abstained from the vote.

The session began with an oath administered by the oldest National Representative present, 78-year-old Progressive Bulgaria MP Rumen Milanov, to the 240 lawmakers. Following the playing of the Bulgarian and European anthems, President Iliana Iotova addressed the members, emphasizing the legislature’s critical role in passing the 2026 State budget and urging Bulgaria to assert its influence within the European Union. After the formation of the six parliamentary groups—including Progressive Bulgaria, GERB-UDF, Democratic Bulgaria, MRF, Continue the Change, and Vazrazhdane—each group elected its respective Deputy Chair.

During a speech, Dotsova stated that the focus must be on restoring predictable, debate-based lawmaking practices. The leaders of the political factions presented declarations outlining their priorities. Progressive Bulgaria highlighted passing the State budget and addressing treasury issues.

GERB-UDF stated its readiness to act as a constructive, center-right opposition. Democratic Bulgaria affirmed its commitment to defending the rule of law and Bulgaria’s European path. MRF pledged support for policies safeguarding citizen rights and economic stability.

Vazrazhdane declared its intention to act as the “nation’s conscience” and stressed the need to reinstate the Bulgarian lev.
