The latest issue of BTA’s LIK magazine is dedicated to commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876. This thematic publication by the Bulgarian News Agency compiles literature, culture, and art related to the event, drawing from BTA’s archives to document historical commemorations. The magazine features commentary from educators, public figures, and local representatives from the revolutionary districts associated with the uprising’s history.
The magazine is set to launch on Monday, April 20, at the St. Cyril and Methodius School in Koprivshtitsa, marked as the Day of the First Gunshot. The event will be jointly streamed with BTA’s national press clubs both within Bulgaria and internationally, with participation from Koprivshtitsa Municipality and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
BTA Director General Kiril Valchev noted that the issue synthesizes discussions held across the national press clubs and the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte. He emphasized that while the uprising faced challenges, its ultimate outcome was the success of Bulgaria’s freedom. Journalists and academics contributed analyses highlighting the youth of the movement’s leaders and the profound choices made by the revolutionaries.
One expert observed that the uprising represented a commitment to an unconditional freedom, prioritizing personal integrity over established wealth. Furthermore, the publication includes a thematic timeline compiling news reports on the April Uprising from BTA’s archives, spanning from its founding in 1898 to the present. This timeline traces historical coverage, including commemorations in 1945 and 1958.
The magazine also previews future commemorative activities, including events planned for 2026, underscoring the enduring national significance of the April Uprising.
