Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Students from Sofia participated in a historical educational game titled “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” an initiative organized by the Sofia Municipality. The event was held in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The activity took place along the Prominent Bulgarians alley, engaging groups of students in a historical exploration.

Divided into teams, the participants navigated the area to locate monuments dedicated to national heroes. The core of the game involved answering questions pertaining to Bulgarian history while following routes that connected various revolutionaries, including Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the event serves to commemorate a significant historical act of courage, providing students with an immersive experience of history beyond traditional classroom settings.

To complete the challenge, teams not only answered questions but also collected components forming a symbolic map of the uprising. Upon concluding their walk, each team composed a short message to the Bulgarian people, inspired by their learning journey. This educational concept was developed in collaboration with history teacher Emil Jassim and is part of the Sofia Municipality’s broader cultural program, executed in partnership with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate.

The initiative successfully engaged students, allowing them to trace the footsteps of the nation’s heroes through interactive learning.
