Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Students from Sofia schools participated in “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical game organized by the Sofia Municipality. The event, held in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, took place along the Prominent Bulgarians alley. The activity involved teams of students searching for monuments dedicated to national heroes and answering questions concerning Bulgarian history.

Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the event commemorates a significant act of courage 150 years ago, aiming to inspire students to connect with history beyond traditional classroom settings. The participants followed specific routes connecting various monuments to key revolutionaries, including Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. To complete the experience, teams answered questions that allowed them to gather pieces forming a symbolic map of the uprising.

The concept for the game was developed with the assistance of history teacher Emil Jassim and is part of the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, executed in collaboration with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate. The initiative allowed the students to literally follow the footsteps of the past. Upon concluding the walk, every team composed a brief message to the Bulgarian people, drawing inspiration from the historical knowledge they had acquired.

The event successfully merged education with commemoration, providing a tangible way for the community to remember its historical figures.
