The Plovdiv Municipal Council recently passed a resolution recommending that the local government take over the management of the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis from the Culture Ministry. Currently, the management of the historic site operates under a co-ownership structure, with the Plovdiv Municipality holding a 55.8% stake and the State owning the remaining 44.2%. According to the Municipal Council, this transfer of management is intended to empower the local authority to enhance the protection, maintenance, and preservation efforts concerning the immovable cultural value of the basilica.
The council emphasized that gaining direct control will facilitate the implementation of comprehensive scientific, cultural, educational, and tourism activities related to the site. The resolution stated that the Municipality possesses a defined vision for the exhibition, preservation, and promotion of the area’s rich historical and cultural heritage. The Basilica of Philippopolis is recognized for its significant historical, artistic, and scientific importance.
Its cultural significance is underscored by its inclusion on the UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage status, specifically as part of the serial property titled “Bishop’s Basilica and Late-Antique Mosaics of Philippopolis, Roman Province of Thrace.”
The decision by the council reflects a local effort to streamline stewardship of this major cultural asset. By assuming direct management, the municipal body aims to ensure that the preservation goals align cohesively with the community’s vision for the future of the historic basilica.
