Sofia Municipality hosted “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical game designed for students from local schools. The event commemorated the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising and took place in Boris Garden Park within the capital. The activity focused on the Prominent Bulgarians alley, providing participants with an interactive educational experience related to Bulgarian history.
Divided into teams, the students followed specific routes that linked various national monuments dedicated to revolutionary heroes. Throughout the walk, the participants engaged in historical quizzes, requiring them to answer questions pertaining to Bulgaria’s past. The historical figures featured included Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski.
By successfully answering the questions, the teams collected components of a symbolic map representing the uprising. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the event served to mark 150 years of a significant act of courage, thereby encouraging students to engage with history beyond traditional classroom settings. The entire concept was developed with the assistance of history teacher Emil Jassim and is part of the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, executed in collaboration with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate.
Upon completing the journey, each team concluded by composing a brief message to the Bulgarian people, reflecting the knowledge they had gained from tracing the footsteps of past heroes. The initiative successfully blended cultural commemoration with active, experiential learning for the participating students.
