Students from Sofia schools participated in “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical game organized by Sofia Municipality. The event, held in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, took place along the Prominent Bulgarians alley. In this activity, teams of students navigated the area to locate monuments dedicated to national heroes and answered questions pertaining to Bulgarian history.
Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the event commemorated 150 years of a significant act of courage, aiming to inspire students to engage with history outside the classroom setting. Participants followed routes connecting monuments honoring revolutionaries such as Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. By answering questions, the students collected pieces of a symbolic map representing the uprising.
Upon completing the walk, each team composed a brief message to the Bulgarian people, drawing inspiration from their historical learning. The game concept was developed with the assistance of history teacher Emil Jassim and is part of Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, implemented in collaboration with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate. The initiative allowed the students to trace the footsteps of the nation’s heroes through an interactive and educational experience.
