President Iliana Iotova stated that the Bulgarian community centre, a historical institution spanning 170 years, maintains a bright future even in the 21st century. Her remarks were made during a meeting with the National Representative Committee on the occasion of the 170th anniversary of the National Community Centres. According to the Presidential press service, community centres played a crucial role in the formation of the Bulgarian community long before the reestablishment of the Bulgarian State.
The meeting was attended by Committee Chair Prof. Nikolay Doynov, other Committee members, and representatives from institutional and local authorities, alongside media personnel. Discussions focused on the necessity of measures concerning the financing of public community centres, alongside the conservation and renovation of existing building funds.
Attendees reviewed the legal framework governing community centres and expressed the desire of Bulgarian communities abroad to establish new public centres. Currently, the only such facility in Edirne is a branch of the Prosveta 1870 National Community Centre located in Svilengrad, Southern Bulgaria. Iotova asserted that the further development of Bulgarian community centres should be considered a priority for all national institutions.
Participants voiced their hope that the National Assembly and the incoming government will prioritize cultural policies. Committee representatives acknowledged the President’s consistent support for the community centres’ initiatives. The meeting also addressed organizational matters related to the anniversary celebrations, with Iotova confirming the full support of the Presidential institution for the planned events.
