President Iliana Iotova addressed the National Representative Committee regarding the 170th anniversary of the Bulgarian national community centres. She affirmed that these vital institutions, which have historically been sustained by Bulgarian patriots and cultural figures through educational activities, possess a bright future in the 21st century. According to the Presidential press service, Iotova noted that these community centers played a significant role in the formation of the Bulgarian community long before the reemergence of the Bulgarian State.
The meeting was attended by Committee Chair Prof. Nikolay Doynov, committee members, local and institutional authorities, and media representatives. Participants engaged in discussions concerning the necessary measures for funding public community centres, alongside the conservation and renovation of existing buildings.
Attendees reviewed the current legal framework governing these centers and expressed a strong desire among Bulgarian communities abroad to establish new public centers. Currently, only a branch of the Prosveta 1870 National Community Centre in Svilengrad, Southern Bulgaria, operates in Edirne. Iotova stated that the further development of Bulgarian community centres must be considered a priority for all national institutions.
Committee representatives voiced their hope that the National Assembly and the incoming government will give precedence to cultural policies. During the session, the agenda covered organizational details for the anniversary celebrations. Iotova confirmed the full support of the Presidential institution for all planned festivities, emphasizing the enduring importance of these community hubs.
