Election Commission Deputy Chair: No Vote Rigging Reported

Rositsa Mateva, Deputy Chair and spokesperson for the Central Election Commission (CEC), stated on Bulgarian National Television that there were no reports of vote rigging during the April 19 parliamentary election. Addressing hypothetical claims regarding result manipulation, Mateva noted that the assessment from international observers and the caretaker government remained positive. Regarding an incident in Montana where one member of a section election commission (SEC) cast ten ballots, Mateva criticized the inaction of other SEC members who were present.

She emphasized that prompt action was necessary once the ballots were cast into the boxes. She asserted that this specific case was an anomaly, noting that it was isolated within the nearly 13,000 voting sections. The CEC spokesperson also addressed changes to the commission’s membership, stating that replacements were primarily due to personal refusals.

While acknowledging that some replacements occurred after initial training, she maintained that the CEC consistently works with various caretaker cabinets. Mateva concluded that the election process was conducted fairly and normally, citing effective communication with the Public Council. She mentioned that thirteen elected MPs are expected to select one representative on Friday.

Reflecting on the CEC’s tenure, she noted the volume of elections overseen, concluding that the body managed its responsibilities effectively.
