Election Commission Deputy Chair: No Vote Rigging Reported

During an interview on Bulgarian National Television on Friday, Central Election Commission (CEC) Deputy Chair and spokesperson Rositsa Mateva stated that no reports of vote rigging were received concerning the April 19 parliamentary election. Addressing hypothetical claims of manipulation regarding Siyanie’s results, Mateva noted that assessments from international observers and the caretaker government have been positive. Regarding procedural irregularities, Mateva discussed an incident in Montana where one section election commission (SEC) member cast ten ballots.

She criticized the inaction of the other SEC members present, asserting that their prompt response was necessary, as ballots cannot be retrieved once placed in the boxes. However, she emphasized that this was an isolated case among nearly 13,000 voting sections. Concerning staffing, the deputy explained that SEC member replacements were primarily due to personal refusal, although some changes occurred after initial training.

Mateva commented on the CEC’s working relationship with various caretaker governments, noting that cooperation levels varied. Overall, Mateva maintained that the election process proceeded normally and fairly, citing good communication with the Public Council. She confirmed that thirteen elected MPs are expected to select one representative on Friday.

Mateva concluded by mentioning that the CEC’s term concludes on May 12, reflecting on the numerous elections held during the past five years.
