Customs authorities at the Lesovo border crossing seized a significant quantity of narcotics on Friday. Officers discovered nearly 363 kilograms of marijuana hidden within a lorry that was transporting washing machines. The seized substance is estimated to be valued at approximately EUR 3 million based on judicial pricing.
The incident occurred when the lorry, bearing Romanian registration plates, arrived at the border crossing on the outbound lane from the country on Thursday. The driver, identified as a Turkish national, presented documentation asserting that the vehicle was in transit, carrying washing machines from Romania destined for Turkey via Bulgaria, and declared nothing further for inspection. During a comprehensive customs inspection, officers found 25 boxes placed atop the declared cargo of washing machines.
These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry, green leafy material. Field drug testing confirmed the substance within the packages as marijuana. Authorities ultimately seized a gross weight of 362 kilograms of the narcotic.
Following the discovery, the driver was detained, and pre-trial proceedings have been initiated. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is preparing to submit a request to the court for the imposition of a detention measure in custody. The seizure highlights ongoing efforts by customs agencies to monitor and secure goods passing through the Lesovo border area.
